Armed Forces Grave Registration

Wounded at Five Forks. Born in Ripley Co. Ind. 3-7-1837 at age of 11 years. Came to Grant Co. Wis. at very beginning of the war he enlisted as a Private in Co. F. 7 Wis Inf After the expiration of ten years he re-enlisted 12 – 30-1863. In [???] 1864 he was appointed 1st Lt of his Co. He commanded th Co. at the battle of Five Forks on Apr 2 1865. Here he was badly wounded in the leg and arm. His leg had to be amputated. He was promoted to the Captaincy of his co. was disch. 6-29-1865 coming back to Grant Co. Wis he married Cornelia L. Crippin on 10-12-1865. She was born at Potosi 5-10-1845 and died at Plfd Ia 2-20-1910 at age of 64 years. To them were born 7 children. The family came to Bremer Co., Ia settling on a farm near Plainfield, Ia. in 1871 They retired to town in 1883. In 1881 he was elected Representative of Bremer as in the State Legislature. coming home he served as Post Master for 5 terms and for 30 years was Justice of Peace
