Armed Forces Grave Registration

McGrane left for Vietnam on March 26, 1967. Less than four months later he died over North Vietnam. He was the first casualty of the Vietnam War from Waverly, the second from Bremer County. Killed three days before his tour of duty ended in Vietnam. He died when his helicopter was shot down behind enemy lines while he and a fellow Navy Officer were attempting to find a Navy pilot whose plane had gone down. Both men volunteered for the mission.
