Obituary

Archie Aultman Barkhoff, 98, of Waverly, Iowa, and formerly of Tripoli, Iowa, passed away on February 23, 2018 at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

Archie was born April 27, 1919 on a farm near Melvin, Iowa, to Enno and Anna (Lupkes) Barkhoff. He received his education in the Dike, Iowa schools. Archie started his working years early in life as his father died when he was fourteen years old. Archie worked for area farmers, dug ditches for the City of Cedar Falls, worked at John Deere before he was drafted into the service with the U.S. Army. He served in the tank corps from May 1942 to December 1945. He was with the 775th Tank Battalion serving in the New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Upon returning home he went back to work at John Deere and later at Flood Caterpillar Repair and then Kuehn’s Nursery. Then in 1955 they bought a farm near Tripoli, Iowa. He and LaVonne farmed until 1983 when they moved into Waverly. After moving into Waverly, Archie helped Howard and Mark Mueller farm for many years.

Archie served on the boards of the Farmer’s Coop, Readlyn and ASCS. Archie really loved farming, and after retiring, he was an avid woodworker.

Archie married LaVonne Louise Mosel on June 22, 1946. To this union was born four children: Marshall (deceased 2007), Rise’ Barkhoff (Ken Hazlett), Rebecca Laas, and Gretchen (Steve) Bonebrake. There are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, LaVonne, and three daughters. Preceding him in death are his parents; four sisters, Christina Beck, Helen Shelton, Elsie Vold and Annie Broeker; and five brothers, Fred, Louie, Bennie, Paul and George.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly, with Pastors Sandra Burroughs and Al Bidne officiating. Burial will follow at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly with military honors provided by Waverly Area Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Thursday, March 1, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly, and also one hour prior to the service at Good Shepherd Chapel on Friday. Memorials may be directed to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community Organ Fund. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family. 319-352-1187
